ADR is the abbreviation of the French name of the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road: "Accord européen relatif au transport international des marchandises Dangereuses par Route". This agreement was entered into in the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in Geneva, Switzerland, on 30 September 1957. It took effect on 29 January 1968. The agreement has been acceded by 39 countries, which naturally also includes the Netherlands.

Transport of dangerous goods by road
The abbreviation "ADR" is usually used to indicated the annexes to the agreement, which contain all the regulations for the transport of dangerous goods. These regulations are every two years adapted to the latest state of the art and scientific knowledge by a committee of experts; thus there is the ADR 2001, ADR 2003, ADR 2005.. The ADR regulations are based on the "Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods", published by the United Nations (also known as "the orange book", due to the colour of the cover).

Carriage of dangerous goods by rail or waterways
In addition, as far as possible they are geared to the regulations for transport by rail (RID: Regulations concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail) and by inland waterways (European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Inland Waterways). This is necessary since containers or the semi-trailers of lorries can be transported not only by road but also by rail or water.

Environmentally Hazardous Substances Act
The European Union implemented the ADR in the European Union with Directive 94/55/EC of 21 November 1994. These regulations fall within the scope of the Environmentally Hazardous Substances Act. There are various laws that deal with the storage, transport and working with hazardous substances, see the “UK Guidance Note ADR”. Tyro Remotes can issue you with an ADR certificate in accordance with Directive 98/91/EC and Directive 70/156/EEC.
